Your requirements depend on when you registered and how much approved education you have completed. Foundational counselor education and continuing education serve different purposes.
For first-time registration on or after January 1, 2026, complete 80 hours of approved education, including required core competencies, within six months. Applicable exemptions are explained below.
Registered counselors with fewer than 315 education hours must complete at least 50 hours of approved AOD education annually for renewal. These hours count toward initial certification education.
Registered counselors who have completed 315 education hours but have not obtained certification must complete 20 hours of approved continuing education for annual registration renewal.
Registrants in good standing who registered before July 1, 2025 are exempt from the 80-hour, six-month requirement, but must meet applicable education and core competency requirements for initial certification. Those first registered July 1–December 31, 2025 were required to submit their 80 hours and core competency education by July 1, 2026. Additional exemptions may apply, including specified graduate degrees. Review the DHCS FAQ and confirm your situation with your certifying organization.
ASCEND is an optional, free 80-hour online core competency education program. Check whether your certifying organization accepts the coursework before enrolling. Accepted education may count toward initial certification requirements. DHCS states that ASCEND does not satisfy CEU requirements for already licensed or certified counselors.
No. The 20-hour renewal requirement described here applies after completing 315 education hours while remaining registered and not yet certified. Do not assume every student needs separate continuing education in addition to their approved school coursework.
